The Mirror in the Sky: Lou Desborough on Astrology, Identity, and the Midlife Pivot

Lou isn’t your "back of the magazine" astrologer.

To say I’m intrigued by Lou Desborough’s transition from a 25-year career in high-end design to professional astrology would be an understatement. Lou is the founder of Cosmic Kinship, and while she still balances the demands of a successful branding business, she is currently navigating a profound "limbo" period.

Lou isn’t your "back of the magazine" astrologer. She is a human first, a designer by trade, and a "serial learner" who has spent years pursuing professional diplomas and mentorships to ensure her practice is grounded, ethical, and real. Her story is proof that you can build a life that looks perfect on paper - successful, busy, and full - and still find yourself at a crossroads asking: is this it?

Roots of Curiosity & The "Sliding Doors"

Lou grew up in the Suffolk countryside, in the "middle of nowhere," where her creativity was born of necessity and imagination. Before the digital age took over, she was potato printing with her mum and learning photography in physical darkrooms.

She spent two decades building a successful design career, often operating on "blind faith" that things would work out - and they did. But looking back through the lens of astrology, Lou sees her journey as a series of "sliding doors". Whether it was not getting into her first-choice art school or a chance encounter with a photographer who handed her a tarot deck at 25, every moment was a nudge toward the path she is on now.

The Breaking Point: Beyond the PowerPoint

By her early 40s, Lou was at the height of her professional game, but her personal life was hitting a brutal reality. While navigating the "sandwich generation" pressure of raising two young children, she became the primary support for her terminally ill father.

Suddenly, the corporate deadlines that once felt vital became nonsensical.

"I really don't want to go and do this bloody PowerPoint presentation... I don't give two shits about this actually... because my dad's over here, really unwell."

This wasn't a sudden "midlife crisis" but what Lou describes as a "slow eroding of self". Grief acted as a catalyst, stripping away the interest in the mundane and forcing her to confront a question she never expected to ask: Who am I if I'm not just a designer?

Astrology as a Language, Not a Sentence

Lou found her way to astrology through therapy, discovering it not as a predictive tool, but as a language for self-validation. She describes the cosmos as "The Mirror in the Sky" - a tool that reflects our innate patterns and "default settings".

She is quick to dismantle the "scammy" side of pop-astrology. For Lou, the responsibility of reading a chart is massive; it requires training in counseling and ethics because what an astrologer says can stick with a person for life.

"The cosmos is just a mirror of what’s happening inside us... we’re just in the middle of our own evolution."

Parenting With a "Manual"

One of the most profound applications of Lou’s work is within her own home. She uses astrology to understand the distinct "blueprints" of her children.

  • The Aries Son: Driven, competitive, and always the first out the door.
  • The Taurus Daughter: Steady, snack-loving, and impossible to rush.

By understanding their planetary placements, Lou moved away from the pressure of "fixing" or rushing them and toward a place of deeper acceptance. It’s not about "parenting by the stars," but about having the vocabulary to meet them where they are.

What’s Next for Lou

Currently, Lou is working on making Cosmic Kinship her full-time "gig". She is draining her design business to "zero" to fuel this new path, operating on a mix of blind faith and the professional credibility she has worked so hard to build.

She knows it takes time. It’s not a rush; it’s an evolution.

What Lou’s Story Teaches Us

Lou’s journey through the "messy middle" carries lessons for anyone feeling "stuck" or "limbo-bound":

  • Grief clarifies what matters: Real-life tragedies put professional "deadlines" into perspective.
  • Identity is always evolving: You are allowed to start again, even at 47.
  • Validation brings peace: Understanding why you act certain ways is more powerful than trying to "fix" yourself.
  • Done is better than perfect: In transitions, the need for 1000% perfection can be a shackle.
  • Nothing has gone wrong: You are exactly where you need to be for the next chapter to begin.

A Final Thought

If you’ve ever achieved the things you thought would make you happy, only to feel unsettled...

If you’ve ever felt a "pull" toward a new path but felt like it was "too late" to change...

If you’re currently in the "juggle" of caring for everyone else while losing sight of yourself...

Lou’s story is your reminder that you aren't lost. You are just looking for a new language for your soul. Success isn't about having it all figured out; it's about being brave enough to look in the mirror.
